It was not an island. It was an era. "Atlantis" was an epoch in the long history of this planet, before our current era which we're unfolding. I doubt it was even called Atlantis but that's the name we've attached to it since Plato's writing publicized it. The words Atlantis and Atlantic are derived from Atlas, the Greek Titan who was said to hold the heavens above the earth. The meaning of this name is reportedly 'bearer' or 'endurer'. The name Atlantis (Land of Atlas) may have simply been a way to tag an enduring civilization for which the name was unknown or could not be deciphered from another language. Very few peoples, places, or eras, end up with the name used at the time or of their own choosing, and quite honestly, the Ancient Greeks were notorius for translating names into their own language. There are only vague mythical references to Atlantis because its destruction was so complete that most of the remains were stored only in the memory of small scattered segments of survivors. It is unlikely that we'll find large stashes of artifacts, but we are even now in possession of various shards of the Atlantean civilization. We always have been, but we've been very slow to recognize them as the Atlantean legacy. I believe that these scatterings have kept alive the history, not the myth, of Atlantis. But alas, an account so ancient and dispersed, over the surface of the globe and throughout our record of human history, is weak and difficult to decipher. Over and over Atlantis has risen from the deep. We've worked repeatedly to try to understand its meaning, to piece together the whole story, or to submerge it again. From where we are now, it seems nearly impossible to trace the fragments back to an era which nearly erased all evidence of itself, especially when most of us have written the whole thing off as fiction, a dream or nightmare. But isn't it rather curious that so many people are so very drawn to Atlantis? In fact, throughout what we know of human history, Atlantis has almost haunted us the whole way, whether by name or simply a fear of global catastrophe and nearly all being lost. For me, this suggests a deep memory trying to break through to consciousness and I think that breakthrough may be manifesting more fervently now. There definitely is a trail to more of a Past than we have previously recognized and I believe we are finally beginning to see it more clearly. Our advanced communications, cumulative scientific understandings, as well as growing openness to more than five-sensory physical evidence, is allowing us to see all the way back to a prior era. In a sense, we are looking forward too, for much of what was reportedly known during the Atlantean Era might be accomplished here and now, advancing us even further by literal quantum leaps. If this too is but a dream, it is a good dream. But really, why bother with an era so far in our past, if it was even there? For me, finding proof of a civilization era prior to the one we're in, or finding a common origin, might just bring us the brotherhood we really need to recognize. It is long past due for us to respect each other for our differences as well as our similarities. But even with those differences, we must realize we are one. We're only fractured by the antagonistic divisions we ourselves have created. I hope that soon we will awaken from this illusion. I think perhaps finding our pre-history is a way to do it, globally, undeniably, and that pre-history has been called "Atlantis". For now, the story of Atlantis must begin with its end...
