The Lesson
"Now, Uncle?"
"Not yet, sister's blood. Concentrate. Feel the power that lies beneath us. Ground yourself in that first."
Ashe looked at his grandnephew. Shane sat across from him in the small glade an hour's walk from the castle. It had become the spot where the elf tutored the boy as soon as the weather had begun to turn warmer, and today's lesson was important. Shane's blood was more elven than human. Control of the gifts he had inherited could never be taught too early. "Center yourself."
The boy nodded then took a few long deep breaths, letting his hands rest palms up on his folded knees. Ashe waited a few more minutes before resuming his instructions. When he did, they were in a low, calm voice.
"There is the Word, and there is the Way. Both paths are open to you, sister's blood. But today it is the Way you will use."
"Yes, Uncle."
"Good. Now.." Ashe looked about. A short distance away, a small brook lay sparkling amid the trees. "I want you to keep your eyes closed, and see the glade in your mind. Do you see it?" There was a short pause before Shane answered. "Yes, I do."
"Very good. Now. I am thirsty. Fetch me some water with your Gift."
"But, Uncle..."
"You can do it, Shane."
"But.."
"Try, Shane"
"Alright, Uncle." There was a puzzling note of resignation in the boy's voice. Ashe frowned, leaned a bit forwards.... And was suddenly drenched in ice cold water that dropped from nowhere. Shane opened his eyes and looked over at him.
"Umm.... there was nothing to put it in, Uncle Ashe."
The tall elf looked at his young kinsman. "Nothing to put it in? Oh, goddess! " He fell to his side and hooted with laughter.
"Are you alright, Uncle?"
Ashe grinned. "Aye. Next time, I'll listen." He rose to his feet, reaching down to help his nephew up afterwards.
"I think today's lesson is over today for both of us."
