D'eshkar!
In the Great Desert to the East lay the great city of D'eshkar,
old and enigmatic to even the most learned of scholars, a place of
magic and wonder. For centuries it stood alone in its isolation, the
only refuge in the midst of the Desert and so a stopping place on
the trading route between the cities on either side of the waste. It
also had a darker distinction, for it was here that a great library
of forbidden lore was built, and that mages the world over came to
consult in their time of need. It was this library that gave the
inhabitants much chagrin, and so the city its name.
For the mages when they came did not travel by ordinary means.
Not for them the long tedious trek through the parched sands. They
were, after all, mages. They arrived by more arcane means. Dragons... Whirlwinds... Wyrms... Demons... Elementals... Chariots of Fire... all
sorts of dramatic and cataclysmic entrances. And if they happened to
speak to any of the survivors in the immediate vicinity of their
spectacular entrance, more often than not the locals' first words
of greeting were "D'eshkar!"
Thus it was that the city became known to the outside world as
D'eshkar. Only a few ever came to know the greeting was not a name
but a comment.
Well, if a mage had just flattened your house, wouldn't you
think he was a "pain in the arse" ?
