When I was a teenager I worked in a summer day camp with Down
Syndrome kids. I found these special people to love unconditionally. We may look at
them and see an obvious difference, a seeming deficit, but their
souls are intact. The lights are on, even though it may not be the
brilliance of what we call intelligence. Their works are perfect,
even though they may not be possessed of what we'd call skill or
coordination or even intent we'd recognize. They often live short
lives, but oh what service they give to all of us in that space of
time.
I recall a poster from the 70's that said "All things are more beautiful for their imperfections." This is true in ways I cannot count. There is a special place in my heart for all whom some have called "children of a lesser god" but I think they are surely more cherished for what they show us while they are with us here on this plane. I am grateful for them being just as they are. 06.13.2001 |
