If the intent of Ecology is to promote a sense of responsibility for this
planet and all creatures herein, who shall have a greater interest
in that? A person who believes that this short life is all there is
and he does not have any lasting effects? Or a person who feels he
is connected to every atom and spark of energy and shall affect all
of it with every action and thought he makes?
There's a condition commonly called "short-timer's disease." This is a person who has handed in their resignation which will take effect in a relatively short period of time. Between the resignation and his disappearance from the organization, a short-timer could be up to just about anything. They no longer have a vested interest in the organization's success or failure. They are likely already thinking about the next job and ready to let this one fall to memory. Short-timers have been known to be fun because the performance pressure is off. However, they have also been known to destroy a lot of things and steal from the company they're about to leave because they just don't care about it anymore. It's already history to them. So who on this little rock cares more about the growth and health of this little rock? The folks who know they're here for 60 or 70 years? Or the folks who believe they may have been here in this lab a hundred times and may return a hundred more? What if they are sure that any damage they do will come back to them, personally, or indirectly through a ripple in the same large pool? 07.31.2001 |
