Unified Theory... I can get into that. I agree that we are, it is, all
unified. I do believe that matter is strung together by
energy/forces. (Though not in any linear or literal sense of
string, of course.) I think we've spent a lot of time assuming that
we could understand everything with the same observational science
with which we've dissected ordinary matter.
Some day we shall indeed have a Unified Theory (arrogant as it may sound), but we're finding out that we'll have to keep making adjustments to our 'laws' to make it all fit. We're making those adjustments though. We're getting closer. A marvelous example of this was the recognition that one could not see blackholes but could know of their existence by indications around them. This is sort of new for us. We usually have to 'see' it first, then try to figure it out. We're learning to see differently, indirectly. We're learning to detect what cannot be detected with our five senses alone. Feature that. In a way, we've been developing a scientific faith that lets us at least postulate ideas seriously and let them stand until they can be shown impossible or verified/accepted. Heretofore, scientific faith was scoffed at best, considered heresy and punishable by death, at worst. Notice the current trend in proposing Theories rather than stating Laws. We have learned that we don't know but we can guess and we've allowed that to be a legitimate activity. That's a rather big evolution for science, in and of itself. Funny that gravity should be one of the big mysteries, considering our experience with it. It is still a force which we can only determine indirectly. Funny too that it holds things together. Isn't that odd? We know what blows things apart. We still don't have a grasp on what holds things together. I think there's a hint in that. What do ya wanna bet that we make our human/spiritual evolutionary leap at just about the same time we find the Unified Theory we'll accept? Wouldn't it be marvelous for science to show us the Face of God... But then, aren't there many of us who have known the ultimate unity in all things for some time? 08.29.2001 |
