We have always had doomsayers. There have always been people who note how terrible things have gotten and that surely The End is near. They have been right. The world, as they perceived it, may indeed have gotten terrible. Also, The End, was surely near... at least the end of the mounting terribleness, as they were seeing it. The picture has always been distorted.
There's great profundity in the line from the Grateful Dead song, "It's the end of the world as we know it." In the ancient days of the great philosophers, some of them spoke the same words of Ending that are being spoken around our world today. Of course, in those early days, the 'world' was very small and flat. They didn't know there was a whole globe out here. Their world did end, the one they knew. It expanded into Europe and Asia. The terribleness was scattered and lessened. There were adventures to be had in our exploration so we were distracted from being so terrible. But eventually, the new boundaries were drawn, new fears developed or old ones altered, new conflicts emerged or old ones were revisited. So, eventually the terribleness built again and grew to fit the space. Again and again "the world" grew, then it grew terrible, and the known world was surely about to end. Continent by continent, we scattered and changed everything in our path. We even expanded into the "New World." Now we're looking at Space or frozen tundra or the ocean floor. We just don't have any more down and dirty fixes like expansion into another continent in the temperate zone. Here we are, knowing that this world is a sphere, knowing nearly every acre of it. We've basically covered all the easily habitable bits. We've again dabbled around with the terribleness but we're beginning to see that here at the edges of this known world, the whole world, we really have painted ourselves into a corner. What are we gonna do? We, humanity, have decided it wouldn't be smart to try to clear out some real estate with nuclear war. There is ultimately no way to win or even survive that. We'll have to get over the whole concept of 'enemy' and the 'enemies' will have to get over it as well, or they will move on. We have decided that we must learn to live together in peace and at least be cordial... even if we have to beat each other up to make it stick? That seems to be what the governments are doing anyway. But what are WE doing? What is humanity doing while all the mucky mucks are mucking about in their power plays and chess games? We are living. We are learning to understand each other. We are making contacts across the fence and across the globe without passing everything through bureaucratic filters. We are working in the background, changing it all. We're finding ways to feed and educate people without all the overhead. We're creating ways to convert what we initially thought were terrible actions by finding and employing the beneficial aspects in them. We're working in our own backyards, neighborhoods, cities, and reaching out to each other across all the imaginary boundaries. We're remembering the importance of this lovely sphere on which we vitally depend. We're remembering to care for her too. We're not converting the world to one big hammer-wielding government nor one god-fearing religion nor one narrow scientific view. We're teaching each other tolerance and acceptance. We're learning to understand our differences and that it is OK to be different. A few renegades do not cancel out our progress. We may not see these changes reported on the news for a while. Our activities are subtle, quiet. News hounds like blasts and sound bites. That's alright, it keeps the bureaucrats and doomsayers busy while the rest of us get on with our agenda. We are gently moving energies, through physical and other means, which are working their way through the entire world population, at least the ones who aren't so wrapped up in their fears that they can't hear or feel anything else. They will get it or they will move on. We are working with the Earth and through her. We are drawing on the splendor of the Universe and our own power to make the most out of this wonderful living world. We're housecleaning. We're dressing up the place. Since we're aware now and we're serious about living here, we want it to be nice... for us, for all. I see what we're doing because I'm looking for it. I know what we're up to because I can feel it and I'm working at it too. My deepest appreciation to the countless others who are working at this as well. This journey is very exciting! 09.27.2002 |
