Awakening

Most people are functioning just fine in the world but they aren't aware of what's going on in the background. They're missing the complexity and true grandness around them. It's not their fault. In fact, it's not a fault or deficiency. They cannot awaken yet. It might disrupt their survival and their ultimate path, and disruption is not the way of things.

A sleeper awakens when the time is right for them and not before. The schedule is different for every soul, ever. Actually, some sleepwalkers may seem to wake up before they have the time and energy to really work on their journeys. I cannot know the reason for this. The power behind it all certainly knows and on some level, the newly awakened spirit knows too or will learn it eventually.

I figure it's a lot like people and alarm clocks. Some people wake up before the alarm goes off. Some hit the snooze bar a few times. Some sleep right through the alarm then rush around like crazy and get to work late and harried. Some people pick up the alarm clock and fling it across the room to shatter against the wall. It all depends on the sleeper, or the soul to be awakened, and whether or not they have a stash of alarm clocks.

Alright, that covers when a sleeper awakens. As for why or how a sleeper awakens, this too varies. Seems to me that all souls must eventually awaken. At some point, given enough cycles of experience or being acted upon by outside forces, something must eventually trigger it. It would be a natural progression. I believe the spirit is always there, just not activated or aggressive. Until awakening, the basic spirit may guide behavior but in a more passive way, like living by a general code of honor, moral code or set of ethics which are absorbed and followed through daily life. It would seem a matter of following but not leading, thus, sleepwalking. The analogy of sheep would apply but I don't like the negative connotations. Being spiritually asleep is not a bad thing, it's just early development, in my opinion.

Some are awakened rudely by a catastrophic event. A near-death experience or devastating loss may trigger the spirit into awareness and put them on the active duty roster. I have a feeling that if it's a 'bad' event which jolts a spirit from sleep, this may be a defense mechanism of a sort too. At these times, the spirit needs to take control of a situation that is already out of hand. Any sudden and powerful boost may also be a way for a spirit to justify the beginning of soul work. Perhaps they are uncomfortable with taking full responsibility for the initiation but it is time to awaken. If so, then other spirits or the universe may assist a soul by kicking them into play, so to speak, with a remarkable personal event.

For those like me, where it happens gradually, I'd call it a soul urge. A niggling awareness begins to press more firmly from the subconscious until finally it breaks through to the conscious mind. Or, perhaps you'd like a metamorphosis metaphor? Eventually the caterpillar emerges from its egg and starts to crawl. It has far to go before becoming a butterfly. In some cases, the sleepwalker stumbles over a crack in the sidewalk and looks down, surprised that there is a sidewalk but then soon it looks familiar and even the crack makes sense.

I have something else to clear up about sleepwalking: All spirits do not awaken within a single lifetime. Nor do spirits awaken only once, generally. I'll go more deeply into my notions about reincarnation but I wanted to bring it up here so I might discuss special cases.

A soul may gain experience without technically awakening. Let's look at special individuals such as mentally retarded persons, children who die in infancy, persons who are killed, persons who die early of disease and so on. These spirits may not have the capacity or time to do a lot of soul work or any soul work, consciously, before they pass on. I believe that they have gained favor with the universe for the parts they play, specifically, in helping other souls progress. Someone has to be the child who dies suddenly so that the mother or father may get the wakeup call or gain experience at that particular aspect of spiritual growth (whether awake or sleepwalking). You'll have to read about karma later to get more explanation, but I think we all need to remember these spirits who have taken on these tasks... and thank them.

Truthfully, in one lifetime or another, it could be you or me in one of those positions. I believe that the awakening may occur in several, if not all, lifetimes. I believe that my individual soul's progress is an accumulation of all my lifetimes and experiences, even those away from a human body and this planet. I believe that I will keep returning and awakening, until perhaps I've learned all I need to know to be content within the Universe, with no more urge or need for spirit work because I am whole, perfectly balanced and securely connecting with all that is.
