| My ultimate goal is to trace my main surname lines across the ocean. I extend my deepest appreciation to other researcher for helping with some of this. Thanks, cousins! The following is a status report, of sorts, detailing where I'm currently stuck or have put aside some surname lines so I can catch up on others. |
| HENDERSON | ..... | Earliest verified ancestor: Henry Henderson (1844-1920) Adams Co OH
Big brick wall. My 2nd Great Grandfather, Henry Henderson, possibly Henry Harrison Henderson, was reportedly the son of Jacob Henderson and Elizabeth Henderson, per his death certificate. Informant was Henry's wife Delia (nee Edgington). Family lore may or may not indicate that Henry's father's name was Harrison (Jacob Harrison? Jacob Harrison Henderson?). This is supposed to match the recitation which says a Rose Henderson had three sons by a Lawrence man, but they were never sworn. I have names that don't jive and thus family lore I cannot yet untangle. I'm presently looking at 1850 Census for an Elizabeth or Rose Henderson, a six year old Henry, and a nearby Jacob Lawrence/Laurence? Update May 2003 - FOUND! There IS an Elizabeth in Adams Co, OH, Sprigg Twp, Bradyville even. She's with a elder woman, Phoebe Henderson, presumably her mother, and she has her young sons with her. And.. AND... she lives two doors down from a Jacob Lawrence (who is married with children, so there's a story, I'm sure, but we may never know it.) |
| EDGINGTON | ..... | Earliest verified ancestor: George Edgington Sr (1707-1791) Bristol, Wales to VA
Sidelined for now because this path has been well traced by others -- Thank you, cousins! George Sr is my 6th Great Grandfather in this line and I'd be thrilled to get all of my lines back into the early 1700's! |
| FRANKLIN | ..... | Earliest verified ancestor: Jessie Marie Franklin (1886-1960) Brown Co, OH to Adams Co, OH
Totally stalled. Very little information beyond Jessie, Great Grandmother. Father is reportedly William Franklin (which is the first and middle name of every third male in America for the last 200 years? hehe) Alas, I do not know the name of Jessie's mother, William Franklin's wife, ie, my 2nd Great Grandmother in this line. No hint as yet to her first or last name, only that at some point she was Mrs Franklin. Update May 2003 - Amazingly, I believe I've found Jessie in 1900 with her father, sister Mary, brother Walter and grandmother Nancy Franklin. Alas, her mother must be gone already. I had the impression that her father died first but that must have been mistaken. However, it does appear that William Franklin may be gone before 1910 and in any case Jessie is then with her husband, Harris Henderson. |
| POLLARD (and RADER) | ..... | Earliest verified ancestor: Jesse Pollard (abt 1811 - aft 1870) OH
Another tangle of lore and absence of records here at this 3rd Great Grandfather. There are so many hints and nothing with which to verify. All of this grouping is tied up with family lore concerning Indian blood, a reported adoption, etc. All of it occurred between close families living in a relatively small geographic area --- Abner's Hollow and Waggoners Riffle or Waggoners Ripple in eastern Adams Co, OH. There are Cooper and Smith connections here which are too obvious to ignore but without documents it's difficult to sort them in where they belong. This and the Henderson block are the most compelling because both lines appear to have been in Adams Co forever and that is surely not the case. At this point, I'd be fascinated to know just exactly how long they really were there. So far, it was nearly 200 years... in the southeastern corner of one county. Amazing. Further astounding that I can't find all the data! hehe |
| RADER | ..... | Earliest verified ancestor: Elizabeth Rader (abt 1820 - bef 1873) Adams Co OH
Also see "Pollard" above. Elizabeth "Betty" Rader is my 3rd Great Grandmother by virtue of being listed on Lavina Rader's death certificate as her mother. Father listed is Hiram Malone. This is where the adoption is rumored. Something went on here, but I have yet to figure out what. Update May 2003 - I've been tracking through forests of Raders trying to figure out where mine fit. They don't. There must be a big hole in the overall Rader weave and I must be holding a chunk of the missing cloth, but I have yet to get it woven back in. I still feel that there is a clue in the adoption, perhaps relating to the Native American link as well. However, if what I suspect is true, there will be no paperwork to prove anything. This may be about one family helping out another in a time of crisis. If so, there may be no documentation. |
| THATCHER | ..... | Earliest verified ancestor: Richard Thatcher (Jr) (1811-1898) Adams Co, OH
Presently on hold. The Thatcher saga was such a tangle to sort out, even with the help of several distant cousins, that I thought I'd give it a rest once we got this far. There is presumably more straight-forward information back from here. The difficulty was a child born to a woman whose man was reportedly killed in the Civil War before they had a chance to marry. She denied the former mate and child upon marrying later. Her father disowned her but the boy was kept in the family... etc. No judgement here, just tellin' it as it was, or appeared to be. Chamblin surname is tied up in this too, as well as what would have been Baker. So, some of these branches will likely never move along further. |
| MORRISON | ..... | Earliest verified ancestor: James Morrison Sr (1751-1821) born in Ireland but Scottish descent, ventured to Adams Co, OH
Hallelujah! And many thanks to cousins Pat and Linda for their research! I'm leaving this one alone for a while since I have so much further to go on the Henderson/Pollard side of my family tree. This and the Edgington line are just exactly what I want to know --- "Where did we come from?" |
| CRAWFORD | ..... | Earliest verified ancestor: Mary Ann Crawford (1854-1919) Adams Co, OH
Also stalled. Only have father's name of George Crawford for this 2nd Great Grandmother. |
| RHODES | ..... | Earliest verified ancestor: Eva Sarah Rhodes (1888-1962) Adams Co, OH
Actually, I do have father's name: Eli F Rhodes; and mother's name: Margaret J Reed. I just haven't gotten any further than that so far. Update May 2003 - In one of those serendipitous moments, while searching for someone way on the other side of the family tree, I stumbled onto Eli (Ely) F Rhoades at 17 years old in the household of John G and Jane A Rhoades. They're in the 1860 Census for Adams Co, Oliver Twp and that is just the right age my 2nd great grandfather would be. Wonderful! At least there's a little bit of a trail to follow now. |
| FRANCIS | ..... | Earliest verified ancestor: William Francis (1757-1839) Philadelphia, PA to Bourbon Co, KY
Not out of America yet on this one BUT it's back to 1750 so I'm willing to let it sit until I can work on getting others back there too. |
| LEWIS | ..... | Quite a sideline but hoping to trace it, eventually.
|
| BRADFORD and SHELTON | ..... | Earliest verified ancestors: Henry Bradford (1824-1907) m Angeline Shelton (1825-1906)
More to go here too. Through the research of others, I know that they came to OH from VA. Likely from England before that. These are 3rd Great Grandparents tracing through my mother-grandmother line, so I would like to get further on this one too, but not right now. |
