Decadent Pleasures
Live a little! Or a lot, a little at a time, if necessary.
Even a small extravagance can work wonders for your well-being, your sense of self, your peace of mind, body and spirit. Whether you do it on a whim or plan it or keep one for an emergency, we really do need to pamper ourselves from time to time. It doesn't have to be something complicated, expensive or time consuming. Just select a moment to do a little something special for yourself that you wouldn't ordinarily do or do something ordinary in an unusual way.
Here are a few ideas:
Bathe
Yes, take a bath, a good long hot bath. This applies to men as well as women. Maybe you and your partner could take a luxurious bath together. If not, go it alone. Enjoy the solitude. Enjoy the feeling of immersion in the warmth and softness, the caress of water. Customize the experience to suit you, with or without bubbles, bath salts, floating candles and soaps. Sensual or refreshing scents in the moist air can relax you with every breath. Scented soap and bath water can leave your skin with a new scent, even after you're dried off, dressed and proceed with your next task.
The best time for a long hot bath though is just before bedtime. The relaxation is likely to help you fall more easily into restful sleep. Just as water can ground an electric circuit, it can take some of the static charge out of any tension or irritation you may have. Let the soothing water do its work and just Be for a while.
Body Appreciation
Explore your own body, caress it with your own hands. Look at yourself in the mirror and strive not to use a critical eye. See each part of you for what it is, objectively. How fine these fleshly mechanisms are, how beautifully complex and versatile, both fragile and strong. No matter how much in-shape or out-of-shape you think you are, no matter what sort of strengths and weaknesses you think you have, your body is your vessel in this life. Cherish it. If you're mirror shy, then close yourself off in a room with no mirrors or explore in the dark. Smell your skin. Taste it. Feel each muscle shift within as you move.
This doesn't have to be anything sexual, unless you want it to be. Just scan and appreciate every inch that is uniquely you. Flex your muscles. Note how each joint bends, or pivots. Ponder the bones beneath the skin as you curl your fingers or wiggle your toes. You could also do some great body appreciation in the shower, especially with bath & body gel or even with ordinary soap. Let your hands glide over your skin. Appreciate the flesh and bone that houses your mind and spirit and enables you to explore the world around you as well as yourself.
Make a Wish, or Several
Any personal craft project can be a joy and temporarily transport you away from the workaday tedium. Here's one that you can do with items you likely have laying around the house. Make a Wish Bucket. Use an old coffee can or other cleaned discarded container. If it doesn't have a lid, you can fashion a cover for it with paper or steal a lid from something else. Paint the can or cover it in contact paper. Maybe you could draw, color, sketch or doodle on a piece of any sort of paper then glue it onto the can. You could cut out pictures from old magazines and glue them together on the outside of the can in any old way to make a collage. Then, when your Wish Bucket is decorated to suit you, start making wishes.
Place your Wish Bucket where you'll see it fairly often, perhaps in a bathroom, at your bedside, or on your desk. When you think of something you want, something you'd like to do, or something you want to happen, wish for it. Write it on a piece of paper and drop it into the Wish Bucket. Once in a while, when you think you have an opportunity to fulfill a wish, reach in and see which one you can make come true. It might be interesting to review all your wishes from time to time, to see what was on your mind at those moments or to see how your wishes change now and then. Wishing may or may not make something happen, but stating your intentions or hopes in a wish certainly can't hurt.
Make It Special
Whatever IT is... make it special. If you're going to sit down and have some tea, then once in a while give yourself some special tea. I'm in love with Arizona Iced Tea. It's pricey for tea but comes in terrific bottles. Most are decorated with elaborate 'skins' but the one with Ginseng is in a beautiful cobalt blue glass bottle. These bottles also have indentations for your fingers and thumb! They're quite elaborate for just bottles of tea but that's what makes it so special to drink from them. DO it, at least now and then. If tea isn't your favorite beverage, then choose another. There's a plethora of soft drinks with creative packaging that very few of us would purchase regularly, however, get a few and keep them on hand or stop by a store and get one on a whim. Maybe buy yourself a bottle of rich iced frappuccino.
Perhaps you'd rather stop at a bakery for a sinfully beautiful and delicious fresh pastry. Maybe you've passed a trinket in a store window, time and again, thinking you might like to have it. Well, serve yourself once in a while. You know whether you can afford it or not and how often.
Love The One You're With
I'm not implying that purchases are the answer to everything, but giving a little gift now and then is more than appropriate for someone you love and you must, you absolutely must, love You. Show it once in a while. Give yourself a little gift of appreciation. If the gift isn't a thing, then let it be time, or attention, or thought to what you want, who you are, where your dreams might take you. Love you. How can you love anyone else if you cannot love the person who is with you from your first breath to your last? Love and honor yourself, because there has never been another like you and there never will be.
