~~~ One Farewell ~~~
Sir Poet paused as he walked down the trail, and looked back once more upon the battlements of Wolf Keep in the distance. With a heavy sigh, he turned and continued on his way to Camelot, his satchel carrying almost as heavy a load as his heart. After a time, the towers of Camelot come into view and the poet slipped into the shadows, entering the Castle by the servants gate. Quickly he made his way to his room; thankful it was on the main floor. Entering he closed the door behind him and quickly packed his belongings into his satchel.
Sir Poet looked around the room one last time and reminded himself he was doing what was right and best for all concerned. He paused, catching his breath then moved to the single table and sat heavily to take up quill in hand. He pulled a clean sheet of parchment from the drawer, dipped the quill tip and began to write:
M'Lord Paladin Cartwright,
Dear friend... for such you are to me, I ask that you honor this request from me. I hereby withdraw my request to court the Lady Wenndolyne. I have spoken with both Lady Wenndolyne and Lord Wolf and feel this is for the best. I further ask that you honor Lord Wolf's request to court the Lady Wenndolyne. He is a good man and will do well by her, I feel. I have thy gauntlet, M'Lord. It goes with me in the hope that the anger and hurt attached to it goes as well. Without the gauntlet, there can be no challenge. I do not wish for my last memories of Camelot to be wondering if ye or Lord Wolf still lives. Please, I beg of thee, in the name of friendship you claim for me, let the matter drop here and now.
Sir Poet signed the missive and set it aside to dry. Taking another parchment, he once more dipped quill to inkwell and wrote:
Noble Lords and Gentle Ladies of Camelot,
I wish to inform thee that I will be departing Camelot for a while. I am off to see the world outside this kingdom. There is so much to learn, so much to feel, so much to see. My time here within these hallowed walls has been filled with love, laughter, friendship, honor and goodness. Know that as I depart, I take with me a little of each of you and hope that you shall keep a little of me within thee. Hold to the values within your heart and Camelot will forever remain a beacon to others.
Yours In Thought,
Sir Poet
Sir Poet folded the missives and blew out the candle upon the table. Walking to the door, he paused a moment and softly smiled in the darkness. Silently he walked down the hall to the servants stairway and climbing upward. He walked down the hall to the Chancellor's chambers, knelt there and slipped the missives under it. Silently he descended the stair again and slipped out from the Castle by the servants gate. Quickly, staying to the shadows, he made his way to the drawbridge and across. Soon he was walking along the road. The stars shone brightly above as the moon graced the roadway around him with its pale light. Safely tucked away in his satchel was the gauntlet. He paused once and looked back at the rising towers of Camelot as they reached for the stars, shinning brightly above, forever just out of reach.
"Fare well, M'Lady Camelot. May you forever know all the happiness life has to give." Wiping away one sorrowful tear, he smiled softly and slipped away into the night.
