More than you wanted to know about...
Wolf Keep Floor Plan

~ Some Features of Main Floor ~

  • Great Hall grand stairway is on the right, a straight run of stairs ending in a semi-circular landing and steps (good dais for a wedding eh?). There's a large stained-glass window here for a backdrop. (It clears the Kitchen roofline). Beneath the straight run of the stairs is the bar and Kitchen entrance.
  • Kitchen is fairly self-explanatory except to note that the line there from the corner of the pantry is a thick hedge row and gates to contain the chicken coop and barnyard ick, etc. The connecting wall toward the back of this area is not a breezeway, but solid wall, also a containment measure.
  • Back in the Great Hall, there are two auxiliary seating areas toward the front. One looks out through large stained-glass window/doors with access to cutting and herb gardens and courtyard, through the breezeway. The other (left side) is around a hearth and also has window/doors, to another nice floral cutting garden and the stables or to the courtyard via breezeway. The other window is as the one over the dais and clears the roof of Chames wing.
  • The Chamberlain actually has a suite of rooms including his bed chamber, a business office and record storage room. The other 2 rooms in this wing (across the hall) are for casual visitors.
  • Massive T-table is vaguely in the center of the GH. Main hearths and seating at the back of the GH are slightly off to the right to allow for stairway, chimneys, and being able to see people enter the hall without having to look through the table decorations.
  • For a scale reference, each hearth is 5ft deep and 10ft wide, ie, about half the size of a small bedroom in a modern house... for just a fireplace. Between the two in the back is where Wenn keeps her hot buttered rum fixings and some blankets on warming shelves.
  • There are hallways back into the rest of the Keep to the left of the tower/stairway and to the right of the main hearth area.

    Down the left hallway
(to the left of the tower/stairway):
  • First room is a spare, possibly a play room or another guest room.
  • Bath discussed below but again, for size reference, the bathrooms are huge, 20ft x 30ft.
  • Majority of left side is the armory and just outside that is the practice yard plus some gardens and possibly a hedge row or minor wall to protect the maze runners from stray arrows and stuff. :)

  • Libraries discussed later.
  • Side exits from the keep castle to breezeways are inset as shown. There are also rear exits at the end of each hall.

    Down the right hallway
(to the right of the tower and fireplaces):
  • All staff quarters for those who live on the premises, except the Chamberlain. These rooms are different sizes, some with windows and some without. Have presumed that this would allow for station and performance to be rewarded with progressively better rooms or such with attrition and promotion.
(Bathroom Note: Despite the time frame, I have assumed that a millenia-smart Wolf would have employed the use of gravity to feed rain water from roof catch basins to operate the bathrooms, even a sun heated tank for warm water and a somewhat insulated one for cold. If the sun water notion doesn't sit well, there's always staff to boil water for baths. Wolf may like a cold dip in the stream but it isn't likely that Wenn or the children would. ;) The Rannis future-plumbing thing was a funny/convenient RP ploy but if referenced for real, I would suggest the more rational explanation. As for sewage, no doubt a pipeline can carry waste water under the Keep and out. Could even dispose of water used from the kitchen this way as well as the bathrooms on the left side of the Keep, sort of the back side.)

1st Floor

2nd Floor Over Lib
The Libraries
The outer library is where all those little conferences take place. It looks much as one might expect, walls lined with bookshelves ceiling to floor. Since the ceilings are 30ft high, this would likely require some of those nifty ladders and/or some steps up to catwalks. The outer wall has a monstrous bay extension with a window seat. There's a desk grouping and another little seating arrangement for reading. Desk is 10ft wide btw. The other thick gray lines are just to represent stand alone shelving. There is also a library table set into the long inside wall... the wall shared with Wolf's Library and yes, just to the side of it is a coolio secret panel as entrance. Haven't figured out where to put Simon when he's hiding before the trial. Perhaps between hearth and stairs to dungeon. There could be a door there so that Simon wouldn't realize it was at the top of the dungeon steps.

Wolf's Library has no regular doorway access. Though it takes up much of the keep castle (50ft x 60ft), the missing space would largely go unnoticed, I think. The access paths are: secret panel in shelves from outer library, hidden passageway through disguised or invisible passage on the left side of the tower AND that small spiral staircase within Wolf's Library (see orange slice looking thing) goes up to W&W's room to a secret panel or on down into the dungeon level where there may be even more library space. The library table in the back of Wolf's Library is work/reading space.

Now, upstairs over the outer library is Wenn & Wolf's suite but it is deeper than that room. The spiral staircase may come up through a magically concealed place in the floor or perhaps into a closet? To accommodate the upstairs hallway, Wolf's Library is one story, but, to let in natural light, there is a skylight between W&W's room and that hall, thus the herringbone area. It would be higher than the roofline and peaked to allow water runoff. Again, this is lost space, but not noticeable.

~ Some Features of 2nd Floor ~

Not too much to tell here that hasn't been told already. There is a balcony railing that runs the width of the Great Hall where the 2nd floor ends to allow the GH to be two stories high. There are two stairways down, one wrapped around the tower and the other grand stairway.

All the rooms/suites are for family or preferred guests and except for W&W's room, they are 30ft wide by 50ft deep, allowing for a sitting room and such. The bath on the 2nd floor is shared of course. These are not self-contained apartments (Can't push the era that much). Wenn & Wolf's suite is 60ft x approx 40ft, with the bay extension and large stained glass windows that open as doors onto the balcony with maybe a few steps to serve as seating at the window too.

There are recessed/covered exits on either side to the exterior balcony as well as exits out the back at the ends of the halls. The odd window configuration is such to match that of the 1st floor.

~ Final Notes ~

Now, again, before you think this is small, or there aren't many rooms, let me point out a few things:
  • A "keep" is often smaller than a "castle."
  • Lord Ancient Wolf is by no means a recluse BUT it would seem more appropriate for him to have lots of land and not a monstrous fortress of a building in which to live. He needs little defense and I would think he had never anticipated even the small family he has, much less a need for 30 guest rooms and whatever? Would also seem uncharacteristically pretentious of him to have much more than he feels he really needs or would use.
  • If we build a gargantuan Wolf Keep... How many screens would a drawing of Camelot's castle take up, do you think? Comparatively, I would think Camelot would be a few times larger than the Keep and so... we need to maintain a scale we can work with?
  • This Keep, as drawn and described, sits within a bailey wall that measures about 450ft x 450ft square. That's length and breadth of 1 1/2 football fields. The Great Hall is 100ft x 150ft or 1/2 a football field, all by itself.
  • The walk from Wolf's Tower to a corner tower is the length of a football field, 300ft. Now that I see the real size of this thing, Wenn would not casually run off to her tower and she'd want more than just a spell to get her to the top. She'd want a dang golf cart to get her from the castle to the base of her tower. hehe
